This is a new post in the High Commission, highlighting the importance of economic reporting in a country and a region which is of increasing economic significance in Africa and growing commercial importance to the UK.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide high quality economic and economic policy analysis across a range of areas, drawing on the wealth of information currently available on the Tanzanian economy and on the EAC more widely. They will work closely with the High Commission’s political and commercial teams, and with professional economists in DFID and elsewhere, sifting the key messages and highlighting areas of particular interest to British economic and commercial interests.
The successful candidate will not necessarily have a background in economics, but will be able to draw balanced conclusions from a range of sources, and make sound judgments as to future developments.
The successful candidate will need to be a confident self-starter, able to build up a good range of useful contacts, and also able to argue the case for more liberal and open trade policies so that Tanzania can benefit fully from economic liberalization.
The job requires strong analytical skills and judgment, and excellent written English: your analysis will go to the High Commissioner, UKTI in Nairobi and London, and possibly also to FCO Ministers and senior management. This will be a full-time contract until 31 March 2012.
Key responsibilities:
• Analysis of developments in the Tanzanian economy – You will be responsible for economic reporting on Tanzania, including on development of mineral and other resources. You will be expected to produce regular economic roundups and to produce ad-hoc briefing on individual areas.
• Reporting on key economic developments within the East African Community (EAC) – You will be required to keep abreast of economic developments within the EAC, working closely with the Department of International Development (DFID) regional office in Nairobi, and with British High Commissions in EAC capitals.
• Business opportunities – You will work closely with the High Commission’s trade team to identify trends which might lead to business opportunities for UK businesses in Tanzania.
• Tanzanian trade policy – You will be required to understand and report on Tanzania’s policy on trade issues, including action to improve the business environment, action to implement the EAC common market, attitudes towards trade agreements, etc.
• Corruption in Tanzania – You will work closely with the DFID governance team to build up knowledge and understanding on corruption in Tanzania, particularly as it affects the business sector; and to work up projects (including eg speeches) which might help to strengthen the anti-corruption agenda.
• Climate change including biodiversity – Working with DFID, to track Tanzanian policy on climate change, the economic impact of climate change, and the use of carbon credit and other funding
Skills Required:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

• Personal drive and the ability to be a self-starter as well as a team player
• Strong organizational, analytical and time management skills, with good attention to detail
• Flexible, resilient under pressure and decisive with a proven track record of delivering results to a high standard within tight deadlines
• Ability to travel occasionally within the region or internationally as needed (approximately 5-10% of the time)
• Ability to work occasional additional hours as and when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
• A college/university level degree, preferably in Economics or related field, or equivalent direct working experience
• Fluent in English, both orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of Kiswahili is an advantage, but not a necessity.
• Experience of working in an international organization will be advantageous
• Background in economics reporting and analysis preferred
• IT computer skills including Microsoft Word, Office, and Internet.
The British High Commission offers a competitive remuneration package, including salary, benefits, a leave entitlement and training package.
Specific training and mentoring for the role will be provided for the successful candidate. This may include training in London and the region. The successful candidate would need to undergo a security clearance and would be offered a contract up to 31 March 2012.
